Updated: April 10, 2008
I put up a "basic engine" of this site on January 26, 2004. It is in continuous construction at this point.
I am a Baseball Geek by nature. I love all things baseball... and, in particular, I am a Fantasy Baseball nerd. As I took last place in both of my fantasy baseball leagues in 2003, I am looking for anyway possible to increase my chances. I figure if I start a baseball news link site, news link submissions will keep me on top of my "game."
[SIDE NOTE: Apparently, it helped. I took first in my league last year (2006) with the help of this site and PlayerTrack.com]
BaseballGeek Blogs
Every registered user automatically has their own BGEEKS blog located at www.baseballgeeks.com/cgi-bin/blog?usernumber. To add additions to your blog, you simply post a message in one of the message areas and click the "Blogit!" link when viewing that message. You can edit the look (colors and fonts) of your blog by clicking the "Edit Your Blog" link in the message areas or the "Set-up Blog" link at the top of the homepage (or this page, for that matter) if you are logged in.
BaseballGeek Standings
The true sign of a BaseballGeek is a love of statistics. Ross Porter (former Dodger Broadcaster) is the ultimate BaseballGeek. Bob Costas is another. As we Geeks like statistics, what better than to have statistics at THIS site?
Every year, the plan is to reset the stats to ZERO (i.e., a "new" season). BaseballGeeks are ranked in various categories that include:
Posting Average (# of posts/# of logins)
"CHA" . . . . . (Comments to Headlines Avg, # of comments written/# of total headlines approved)
"HLAs" . . . . (BGeek equivalent of RBIs, headlines approved)
"PCWs" . . . . (Photophun Contests Won - there will be a link to a baseball related photo, and users photoshop that photo)
"CCWs" . . . . (Captions Contests Won - there will be a link to a baseball related photo, and users caption the photo).
BGeek Awards will be announced at the end of every season, which ends the day before Opening Day of each year (every season begins on Opening Day).
BaseballGeek Guests
At the present time, I have decided to allow unregistered visitors to the site to post freely to the site. Email addresses and web site addresses will be deleted from guest posts. Additionally, IP addresses are logged. If you abuse the system, your IP address will be banned. As of January 12, 2006, we have had to close the guest's ability to freely post because of a spammer problem. You must register to post. I prefer free posting, but the spammers have made my final decision for me.
The good news is that you do not need to register to add a news link. Guests can add links, but they are sent to our submission review where they have to be approved before they see the light of day on the homepage.

History of Site
December 11, 2003: BaseballGeeks.com is registered
January 21, 2004: Programming of the site begins
January 26, 2004: Basic site "engine" is completed with minor bugs
January 29, 2004: Completed "Ump"/moderator approve link function
January 30, 2004: Corrected the fixed background for non-IE browsers
January 30, 2004: Added a "Last Comment Posted" element in headlines
January 30, 2004: Cosmetic stuff, added some fields to the threads for future functions. Fixed a nasty bug that overwrote a user's userfile when approving their headline. This deleted DodgerRefugee's userfile. Sorry!
February 10, 2004: Reworked the manner in which the threads are handled and approved. Created a "navigation" system that allows users to sort through previous links.
February 19, 2004: Switched service providers; worked on new look
February 20, 2004: Worked on new look and placed up on site; working on ability for guests to post
February 22, 2004: I have decided against the idea of giving Guests the ability to post. Too easy for, say, a Yanks fan to anonymously "flame" a Bosox fan. :)
April 23, 2004: Added a new logo, new color to the background page. Seven total varying logos with photos of well-known players/events. I am also working on a function to allow users to submit their own baseball articles. Font for the headline (for my future reference, or if you would like to submit your own logo) is Franklin Gothic Medium Cont, 65 pt. I encourage you reading this to design your own logo for the site.
March 1, 2005: In the last few days, I have completely changed the site to follow a much simpler structure. There is a bulletin board where all discussions/comments are placed, which is much different than the previous structure. I have also created the potential for paid users to see all submitted links and to have private discussions, similar to one of my favorite newssites (fark.com). I am still completing the site, but I am aiming for the next few days
March 3, 2005: Getting closer to finished with the new design. I completed the Classifieds functions today and fixed a number of bugs. Final bug testing and the BGeeks standings page are all that's left.
March 6, 2005: Corrected a pretty nasty bug in the post message function that continually reset the userlog statistics
January 7, 2006: We put out our first podcast, which can now be found at Itunes
January 12, 2006: Guest post approval function is completed
March 10, 2008: Added confirmation code function so that guests can add news links. We were receiving literally hundreds of spam ads as news links daily.
April 10, 2008: Server switch is complete, which should make things faster. However, I am still updating some of the site, including the blogging functions, so it might take a little while longer before everything on the site is working like it did before the server switch.
