You don't have to have the best players in a given position, but the players you do have should provide you with balance across the board of the statistics that your league counts.
In addition to looking at actual, total stats, PlayerTrack will compare all players on an equal time scale. This means that those players (like Mike Jacobs) who played a substantially shortened season will be looked at AS IF they played an entire season.
Admittedly, this has pitfalls... it has the tendency to rank part-time players higher than noted studs.
Still, if you pay attention to stats from a player like Graffanino, you'll see he had even better stats than, say, a Durham (i.e., more stolen bases, more runs scored) in substantially FEWER at bats.
As you might imagine -- even for me -- the first time I see the playertrack results (all I do is input stats... playertrack churns the stats up and creates the rankings), it is like opening presents up on Christmas morning.
I was surprised, too, by the inclusion of Mark Ellis and Graffanino in the top 10.
But, in the end, the numbers do NOT lie. And, having used this system and "fantasy ideology" for the first time last year... and WINNING my money league outright, while spending the second to last in money via free agents, trades, and weekly moves... well, I'm gonna give playertrack the benefit of the doubt again.
The guy below me, who spent the least in our league, finished in last place out of nine teams.
I, of course, won't be setting my sights on drafting Graffanino this year. I will look like a friggin genius if Graffanino and/or Mark Ellis tear it up in 2006.
If you're reading this Mr. Mossi, it's nothing personal. Your career stats were pretty good, compared to most pitchers of today and you faced some of the best hitters that the game has ever known. No harm, no foul!!
